The dates are off for the third and fourth weeks. However, the days are right. Sorry!
The fifth graders are working with two books to learn about the skill of summarizing. While reading The Sign of the Beaver and Sing Down the Moon the students will be challenged to sum up one chapter in only 1-3 sentences. This skill will help the students figure out who the most important characters are and what the most important details are.
Check out the rubric below to make sure you have met all the requirements.Recently the fifth graders finished reading The Jacket, by Andrew Clements. This books tells the story of two boys who are grappling with race, bullying and typical 11-year-old issues.
The focus of this unit was making connections and answering questions about literature. The final project asked the students to find connections between the book and themselves, the book and another book, and the book and the world. The fifth graders are currently working on a piece of narrative writing. They have selected a "small moment" from their life and are working towards a published piece of writing.
Currently we are working on revising our work. The students will focus on elaboration and making sure that their story follows the format of a "Story Arc." It has been very exciting to see the students work their ideas from a basic idea to a well-crafted story. |
