American Revolution Journals
FamiliesWheatleys- This family lived on King Street (now State Street) in Boston and had a slave, Phillis. The father was a tailor, an occupation much in demand of the days before clothes were really made. This family had many ties to England and supported the Loyalist cause.
Paines- This Paine family lived in what we now call the North End, not too far from the house of Paul Revere. The father of this family was a silversmith and he was friends with Revere. This family is decidedly Patriots. Brants- This family could have lived in Newton, Lincoln, Lexington or Concord. These towns were not suburbs like today, but rather they were farm towns. This family did not have a specific loyalty. Lews- The Lew family lived in Pepperell, Massachusetts. The father fought in the French and Indian War. It was a family of freed slaves. The Lews were Patriots. Pinckneys- This family lived in Charles Town, South Carolina. The Pinckneys were very rich and well educated. They had slaves. This family had a hard time deciding which side to support. While they opposed the taxes put in place by the British Government, they also felt that their personal feelings coincided more with the Loyalists. Crowninshields- This family lived in Salem, Massachusetts. The father was a sea captain and successful merchant. Salem shipowners wanted freedom from the British government but they were not "hot-headed" like the Boston Patriots. |
